It has been a tough week for Alex; he has had to endure the flu and a series of sores inside his mouth. I think he has handled the flu well, but the blisters in his mouth have been too much to overcome with grace.
Alex has many gifts; among other things, he is smart, takes direction well, athletic and compassionate. Like us all he has things that he is going to need to work on, things he will have to earn. One of them is a level of toughness. I am sure he will achieve it, and when he does it should be celebrated more than the heights he scales with his gifts because this is something he will have had to work at.

Super Soldier Formula
Starting last Wednesday, Michael is receiving a shot everyday before bedtime. For a little kid that could be a heavy burden. Nate, a kid from across the street, has had the same shots for years, and at first he did not like it at all. Well, Michael is a bit tougher than him, and has handled them with absolutely no problems.
Weeks before this started we told him he was going to start getting injected with the "Super Soldier Formula," from the Captain America Mythology. We think that association has really helped him, because he sees at something that helps him, for a price, instead of just daily pain.

John told us that this was the greatest day of his life
Last Friday night we took Michael's friend, John, out for the evening. While having dinner at Max & Erma's John told us that this was the greatest day of his life; they had had a popcorn party at school that day and now he was going to see a movie with his "best friend!"
When he said that Jenny absolutely melted; the lack of close friends has never bothered Michael, but it has always gotten to Jen. I tell her not to worry about it, because she is projecting her dreams and hopes on to Michael, but still she has worried about it. When John said those words, Jen looked at me with a smile from cheek to cheek.

The Tooth Fairy is able to use Santa Claus's "network"
The boys had an overnight camp-in in the tent they received for Christmas from thier Uncle JoeY and Aunt MM. All went well, but it was not without drama. You see Michael had lost a tooth that day, and he was concerned that the Tooth Fairy would be confused because he wasn't in his bed that night.
Our fears were groundless, as she found the tooth no problem; in the morning Alex told us he knew there wouldn't be a problem. He said that the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny are able to use Santa Claus's "network" to keep track of all the kids and would know where to go.

Relentless
Last Saturday Michael started a basketball class. He seemed to have fun, but of course his listening was not perfect. He has trouble with his auditory processing and a gym has a high level of ambient background noise. However, by watching the other kids, he was able to fake it pretty well.
As usual Michael's best attribute was being relentless, and that paid off on when they scrimmaged; he got TWO steals. It was all hustle. Sometimes that hustle would take him out of a play as he would over pursue the ball, but that is fine; I would rather see him try his best and fail giving it his all, than be one of the kids that give minimal effort.

Mom, there are three geniuses in the family, but your smart too
The other day Alex said something that made Jenny laugh: he told her, "Mom, there are three geniuses in the family, but your smart too because you married a genius." Instead of taking offense, Jen laughed and has retold the story to me no less than three times. From Alex's words I would guess that, for the foreseeable future, he will not have any confidence problems in school, which is good. Not that I thought that it would happen, but there was always the possibility that his speech therapy could erode at it.

Winter Festival
Last Friday night the Eli Pinney held the Winter Festival. Despite it's name there was not much winterish about it, everything was held inside and there were no winter themed decorations. Despite the lack of seasonality, it was a rousing success; the PTO raised a lot of money, and our kids had fun.
The PTO spent money to make money this year by bringing in the vendor "Super Games." They provided jumpy things, padded cars and giant soccer ball bowling (as seen on the front). It was a step up and a needed change of pace compared to other PTO sponsored Festivals. We also chaperoned Kari and Kent. For the most part they behaved themselves and added to the boys enjoyment of the evening.
