Today was Michael's recital for his Little Shepherd's school. Instead of attending our normal service, we ventured to the 9:30 at the Lutheran church that his school is affiliated with.
Michael did very well up on stage. He started out softly, but early in the performance you could clearly identify his voice among his classmates. By the middle of the presentation, any words of emphasis in the hymns were dominated by his voice. On top of the vocal performance, no one exaggerated the hand gestures associated with the songs better than Michael; it was as if he was the star of Saturday Night Fever.

Can We Paint It?
As you can see, the big painting project is underway. Our house should be lighter (if you look in the picture you can see the new color) with a greenish trim when all is said and done.
Everytime Bill and Tom are over here painting, Michael is outside asking to help. Most of the time the boys just have Michael sit there and talk, but last night Uncle Billy let him paint. Bill and Tom say that there favorite part is when Michael leaves their side he first says "Excuse me."

The Incedible HULK
The debate rages on. Alex insists that his Incredible Hulk pajamas make him bigger, where as others claim that Alex makes the shirt larger. Even the scientific prowess of Dr. Bruce Banner would not be able to tackle this conundrum; for now, it may be best that we all believe what we want about Alex and his pajamas.
Like the mystery of the Hulk pajamas, the origin of Alex's fascination with the tragic figure remains elusive. Alex has only seen the cartoon once for about 2 minutes, yet he seems to love all things Hulk. Perhaps his fixation with the Hulk is due to the fact that his favorite color is green. Maybe Alex identifies with the primal strength of the Hulk, after all Alex is very quick to point out that he is strong because he can carry pumpkins. Perhaps his love of the Hulk because he likes to say don't make me angry, you would not like me when I am angry. Whatever the origin, Alex has decided that, for the time being, he is a medium boy Hulk. ~ Robert A Patton

It's Like He Owns The Place
Doesn't it look like Michael thinks he owns the place? At home that would be fine, but this was at the Schembechler's house. I think that Michael must have been confused and thought that we were at Michigan Stadium, because after all the Buckeyes do own that place.
We just returned from Dora Live!, a theatrical production at the Columbus Palace. Michael and Alex are certainly exposed to a great number of ways to kill time and have fun. Which is fine of course, as long as it is in tandem with exposure to hard work such as Michael has been doing.

My Happy Ball
Michael came through his appointment at Dr Zip's with flying colors. The first two extractions of blood were difficult, but the last seven were a piece of cake as you can seen. In fact, they are taking blood in this picture and you can see he is a pretty happy guy.
We find out the results of the blood test, and of the MRI he had two week before, on Monday, May 18th.

Cristopher Robbins
While we were visting Jenny's parents in California we took a quick trip to Disneyland. The boys of course loved it. Here is a picture of them with 2 of there heros: Tigger and Eyore.
Jenny's Mom wanted to do this with them before she started chemo so our timing was quite good. Chemo has now started and she is doing well, our prayers are with her. I hope you are doing well too -Robert

Slide On Over
I liked this picture enough that I sent it to his godparents, Bonnie and Bill. Alex liked running and then sliding on your hardwood floors. It was very theatrical. In the back of my mind, I expected that he would break out into song at any moment. Patton Easter 2003
Hey a picture that includes the adults, what a novelty! We had this taken on Easter Day at Jenny's Parent's country club. They have a nice breakfast, a huge egg hunt and wonderful activities for tech children. In the past it was a marionette show, but this year it was a petting zoo with pony rides. Our boys both rode the horse and Alex spent time with the lambs, rabbits and goats.

It is easy to dismiss efforts to make Cicely happy on the basis that her memories may not stay with her long. Sneak Attack
After shopping for Easter outfits for the boys on Palm Sunday, we stopped to get gas for the Jeep. A long time ago, when Michael was younger and we had not been introduced to Alex yet, I invented a game that we play at gas stations.
While gas fills our tank, I circle the car like a predator looking for a moment to strike. I craftily choose a moment to strike and open the door screaming "Boo!" or some other such exclamation to the delight of the boys. Quickly, I retreat to choose another avenue of attack. I can come from anywhere: front doors, back doors and even the cargo door, as you can tell from this picture. I suspect that the boys like it well enough that they will play this game with their own kids one day. ~Robert

Biker Boy
We are having lovely spring weather once more, allowing to take advantage of the great outdoors. On this day, I took the boys to the park to let them ride their bikes. Michael rode his Spider-man bike he got for his birthday. Not to be outdone, Alex pretended he was "Ice-man" and that he was riding his "Ice-bike."
Later that evening we went to M with the Schembechlers and Statens. Jenny and I talked about it, and we think that next time you come to Columbus you should join us for our monthly night out. Furthermore, you should experience M, it is your daughter's favorite bistro.

Leading The Way
I took the boys and their bikes to the park the Saturday before Easter. It is a very good park to ride bikes. Michael's bike is a Spider-man bike that he got from Billy for his Birthday. Not to be outdone, Alex pretended that he was iceman and that this was his ice bike.
Jenny and I were talking this morning and we might try to get back down there in the autumn. We have to go to Jenny's brother's wedding, but that is the only travel we have in the near future with the exception of Jenny continuing to visit her mother. ~Robert

Big Hug
I was checking out of Best Buy and the boys kept giving each other "Big Hugs." I thought quickly, captured several pictures and this image turned out pretty well. Being boys, the "Big Hugs" were a pretense for a little bit of wrestling and a lot of fun.
Speaking of merriment, I am certain that they will have a blast in San Marino this week. Easter is a wonderful holiday to head out west. New Years Eve is another moment when your home shines. Construction Crew
Your great-grandsons have such a hard life. Do you know that this particular umbrella did not even have beach side waiter service? Furthermore, these toys provided by the "Ho-tower" were retail. Retail, mind you! They had to make due with just a beautiful beach in a great location.
Being troopers, they persevered and enjoyed themselves to the fullest extent that circumstances allowed. Just because you are not staying in your own private castle does not mean you cannot make one.

Where The Boys Are
The Miami pictures are not yet done! We have many, many more, but I promise that I will soon wrap them up. Jenny took this picture long after I left, so I do not have the inside scoop on this particular snapshot.
However, I do have my thoughts. I called it "where the boys are" after those spring break movies in the 60s. I think this image of Alex lounging around demonstrates all the sophistication and culture of 19 year old fraternity boy on vacation ;) That is my Alex!

It's NIce To See You
This picture is called "It's nice to see you." Michael's friend Max helped us pick up Michael at Sunday school this week. Michael had not seen Max in a long while and this is his expression when he first sees Max.
Michael has only 2 more Sunday School sessions left this year: the week after Easter and the week before. It is hard to believe that it will be over so soon. It seems as though it just began. Despite the fact that his teacher was a battle-axe Michael did very well this year. This portends a bright future because if he can survive her he can survive any teacher that is thrown at him.

Where Ever You Go
I promise the Miami pictures will end soon. We took so many (500!) so it was inevitable that a good number are worthy of gracing a postcard to your door.
Like this one for instance. I call it "Where ever you go..." You can fill in the rest and even pencil in which boy is saying it to his brother. No matter how you imagine it, I cannot believe that it would be far from the mark. For the most part, those 2 get along better than any siblings I have ever known.

Jet Setters
I call this picture "the Jet-setters." Michael and Alex sure have gotten around in their young lives. They are going to go to LA for Easter in a few weeks and it seems like they just got back. Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, Mexico and Texas to name a few. Keep your fingers crossed, maybe we can back to Miami this year. After this LA trip the only place we have to go is New Orleans (Jenny's brother's wedding). I am ready for things to quite down. The weather is beautiful here today; I hope it is nice down there for you too.

Oh The Places You'll Go
Your god son just returned from a nice long trip to Miami. A brand new hotel on South Beach in a room with view; what more could a boy ask? How about a brand new playground next store, heated pool and a wonderful diner around the corner (Big Pink)? It is safe to say that Alex is having a wonderful childhood.
I am sorry that I have not sent more picture recently. I have been sending cards like this to Molly each week which has allowed me to be lazy with respect getting prints made. I hope you enjoy this and I promise I'll send another soon. ~Robert

I think this picture is just lovely. You both look so happy just playing at the beach. I am not alone in my appreciation for this picture. When I asked Bill this morning which picture was his favorite he said this one. Jenny and I took over 500 pictures, so that is saying something.
I am very glad that you came down to the beach. It allowed you to observe the boys in their native environment allowing you a better look into their world. If nothing else, we got a great picture out of it!

Grandma Alex
The boys had a great time visiting grandma last week; from this picture I think you can tell she had a great time also. Out of all the pictures I took on this jaunt the consensus is this one is the best.
Grandma came down to the beach and stayed for a few days. I think that was great for everyone. Grandma got to go to the beach, the pool and explore a part of town that is almost a different world; a vacation without really leaving home.

Like Father Like Son
This picture was taken by Jenny at the Dublin St Patrick's Day celebration on March 15th 2003 (We have problems with dates here - perhaps we should give city hall a calendar).

Can We Build It
Papa decided to build shelves and Michael and Alex were right there to help. The boys measured, marked, hammered and painted in their effort to aide him. At one point, Michael was hammering with two hammers at the same time talking about John Henry. In fact, Michael even asked my Dad if they were going to go build a railroad after they were done with the closet.
This should arrive while the boys are in your company, so show it to them and ask them about it. I am sure that with some prompting they will tell you all about John Henry too.

Thank you for coming to Spider-man Live with us. It was a real treat to spend the evening with you. We really liked the wrestling match and when the bad guy cried for his mommy. We thought that it was very funny.

Your grandson decided to stick his finger in a wiffle ball. Perhaps he heard one too many stories about that boy and the dyke. Maybe, but I don't know. His finger got stuck. A decision had to be made, the ball or the finger. It was a nice ball and the kids liked it a lot but Jen decided that Alex might need all 10 fingers at some point. They tried many tactics, but the diabolical ball thwarted them. Eventually, they resorted to going to Alex's doctor. It took an entire pediatric practice to dislodge it, but they did it. As you can tell by the "after" picture, he was happy with just having the ball transformed into a ring, but his mother convinced him to have it removed. Reliving His Childhood

But there he was, playing in a teletubby costume and he has not seen them or played with them in over a year. As you can tell he is having fun. I am sure Ann will like this picture. We should be there any day grandma! Nana has made the boys new shorts for the trip. They are very excited to show them to you. One pair is red and the other is "Bob the Builder." You should expect us Saturday morning. Maybe we can go to breakfast, or maybe just play at your house. Michael loves helping with laundry if you have any and both boys like to be grocery helpers if you have any shopping you want to do.

After
I was at work on the morning of Thursday March 13th 2003 and I received a call from Jenny. Alex decided to stick his finger into a wiffle ball and it got stuck! Jen tried to dislodge, but she could not.
Tacking a new tact, she and Alex proceeded to the Doctor's office after they dropped Michael off at school. It took a scalpel, some time and a lot effort but eventually they got it off. First, they cut it into a ring, and finally they cut that circle off. Alex was very happy to have things return to normal as you can see in his almost "After" picture.

Tacking a new tact, she and Alex proceeded to the Doctor's office after they dropped Michael off at school. It took a scalpel, some time and a lot effort but eventually they got it off. First, they cut it into a ring, and finally they cut that circle off. Alex was very happy to have things return to normal as you can see in his almost "After" picture.

Donutmans Revenge
Jen & I have taken up hot tea again. I finally got her drinking peppermint; she used to drink green and some other flavors. I used to drink earl grey, but I have been pretty much peppermint lately. We sweeten it with honey instead of sugar. We have lots of tupelo honey around the house because of Michael.
I always used to get peppermints from you and grandpa and have always loved them. Michael seems to have an affinity for mint also so perhaps it is genetic. By the time you get this, we should be arriving soon!

Ready, Aim ....
This was winter's last gasp. As you can tell by the absence of Alex's hat and gloves it was pretty warm. In fact, it was about 50 that afternoon! We should be with you at the end of the week and that will redefine warm!
The boys are still talking about the beach, so I would guess that they are excited. Everything is going pretty well; 2 night before we go to Miami, we are taking the boys to see Spider-man Live! at the Palace theater. I am guessing that they will really enjoy it - our seats are 5th row center! See you REAL soon --- Robert

First The Chair Then The World
In this particular picture Michael & I don't look great, but Alex sure does. I have christened it "First the chair, then the world!", a moniker inspired by Alex's "B" movie villain grin.
Jenny plays lots of board games with the children, but I am the physical parent. When they need to get something out of their system we play "Hop on Pop" or "Lobo." I have it on good authority that they may be playing in a theatre near you this spring. ~ RAP

Hurray
We took the boys to the Circus for the first time this week, and they loved it. They saw tigers, elephants, horses, trapeze artists and acrobats. As you can tell from the pictures, the did more than see the animals, Michael & Alex got to ride the ponies and elephants; that was certainly their favorite moments.
We took Michael's friend Andrew with us; as you can tell he had a wonderful time also. As much fun as the children had, it was clear that Jen had the most fun; in her defense, she had never been to the Circus either! ~ See you soon, Robert

Jenny, Michael & Alex's first trip to the circus was a rousing success. Long after the audience had hushed a certain female's claps could be heard echoing through the three rings.
Michael and Alex rode the ponies and Michael went on the elephants twice! I would say that the hightlight was the acrobats, elphants and the Human cannonball. When ask if he would like to be a human canonball, Alex responds "Noooo."

Bowl-O-Rama
Jenny took the boys bowling Friday with their friends Hayden & Blake. The boys really like to go bowling, my dad has even taken them once.
I have been told Michael is a natural at it, must be those Ohio genes. We will be there really soon. Michael and Alex talks about the beach everyday. I'll make your text green in honor of St Patrick's Day.

Holding Down The Fort
I call this picture, "Holding down the Fort." Michael loves the snow and plays outside even in winter. This particular day it was 40 outside so it was a good day to play in the snow.
I mentioned last time how the boys talk about the beach each day. During a snowball fight, Jenny asked Michael what he likes best -- the Snow or Beach. He responded the Snow. He certainly is an artic animal, whereas Alex blooms in the warmth which you will be able to see for yourself very soon.

The Ungrumpy Gourmet
I decided to call this picture "The un-grumpy gourmet." It is always nice to see Alex happy. On this night his meal consisted of two courses:
Macaroni and Cheese (The house specialty)
Corn (His personal favorite)
With a dinner such as this how can we not end up with a 5 star review from the Gourmet himself, Alexander. Alex also enjoys lunch meat and will eat it without bread, but for some reason he has not tried steak yet. Perhaps he is not old enough to appreciate the glory that is A1.

Bon Appetite
I call this picture 'Bon Appetite'. Jenny was making a special lasagna for uncle Billy with the ingredients she uses in Michael's entrees. Bill also seems to be intolerant of wheat and milk.
She undertook this operation while Blake was over playing with Alex; Alex thought it looked like fun and decided to make it a group endeavor. Jenny showed Alex how to do one layer and Alex proceeded to do the next two, finishing the lasagna! From this picture, I would guess that Alex is touch proud of his handiwork as he should be; Uncle Billy said it was excellent. I am sure that Alex will appreciate the praise.

Not Enjoying It A Bit
This week Papa took Michael to Father Son night at his school. It was a handyman themed night and I thought my father was better suited to the task. He is better with tools and he has more enthusiasm for them. I could have taken Michael, but I would be concerned that my lack of enthusiasm for that kind of task could corrupt Michael from enjoying them. Plus it was good time for them to spend together.
As you can tell, I did go, but just to take pictures -- and a good thing too. It is nice to capture something like this for them later. See you soon ~ Robert

Snows Up
This is a picture from WINTER STORM 2003 -- THE REVENGE! I had presidents day off, so Michael and I went and snow blowed Nana & Papa's house and went sledding there. As you can tell, it got pretty deep, almost too deep for sledding. However, we still managed. Soon I'll send you pictures from the beach instead of from the snow! Be there before you know it ~ Robert

Babushka
Here is a silly picture of Alexander wearing Jenny's hat. He likes to do silly things and has quite a sense of humor. Alex finds lots and lots and lots of things funny.
We have had our biggest snow of the year this weekend. Snow everywhere. I think we might go sledding tommorrow since I have the day off. By the time you get this Billy will be there within a day or two. I hope his trip goes well. ~ Robert
